Members of Halton Hills Council present the Heritage Acton board with a facade improvement grant for the Acton Town Hall Centre restoration.

Heritage Acton’s campaign to restore the Acton Town Hall Centre to its former beauty was bolstered by the Town of Halton Hills this week.

The municipality presented the Heritage Acton board with a cheque for $17,500 through its facade improvement grant program, which encourages property owners in downtown areas to implement aesthetic improvements on their properties.

“We’re very appreciative of the Town of Halton Hills,” said Heritage Acton board chair Lloyd McIntyre. “This will be the foundation of the next part of our capital campaign.”

Heritage Acton, which manages and maintains the facility, kicked off the campaign to fund urgent renovations in 2020. Since then, the building’s heritage chimney was removed and rebuilt, a new cedar shake roof was installed, bricks were replaced, the bell tower was repaired, and much more.

The building is commonly used for everything from major community events and theatre productions to fitness classes, weddings and birthday parties.

A portion of the large facility is home to the North Halton Mental Health Clinic and Downtown Acton BIA. The former firehall garage within the Town Hall was recently transformed by the Town of Halton Hills into a youth centre.

The building has a long and storied history in Acton. The doors first opened with a grand ball in 1883, and it remained the hub of local social life for more than 80 years.

When the Town of Halton Hills deemed the building as surplus and declared it unsafe in the late 1970s, local residents rallied to save the building.
From there, Heritage Acton was born.
