Gallery: Raise a glass for the McGibbon, Georgetown’s hangout

With the once-popular gathering place recently torn down to make way for condos, we explore the building's century-plus history in photos blending years gone by with today

Georgetown’s much-beloved McGibbon Hotel is no more. Demolition crews have been working for months to bring down the historic building at the corner of Mill and Main streets.

For many, it was an immovable institution in the heart of the downtown; a favourite weekend watering hole. A Georgetown Facebook group even tracked the progress of its demolition. Some saw it as an eyesore, especially toward the end of its life. Nevertheless, it has instilled a great sense of nostalgia for a time when people would be greeted by this landmark.

The condo to take its place had its own saga as well. It hung in limbo after the developer cancelled the project in 2018 and was revived again in 2020 by a new builder. The 10-storey, 169-unit development includes plans to replicate the nostalgia of the McGibbon at the base of the building.

We've blended old photos of the McGibbon with modern-day images to create a unique walk down memory lane.
