Head-on collision claims life of Vespa rider from Oakville

Burlington man charged with dangerous operation causing death and impaired operation causing death, police said

A 58-year-old Vespa motorcycle rider from Oakville died Wednesday when he was involved in a head-on collision with a Nissan Rogue SUV.

Halton Regional Police responded about 1:40 p.m. to the area of Lakeshore Road West and Windsor Gate in Oakville for a crash that involved three vehicles. The Vespa driver was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release.

The driver of the Rogue was identified by police as Christian Cardinali, a 25-year-old Burlington resident. He was arrested by police and charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and impaired operation of a conveyance causing death contrary to the Criminal Code, the release added.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is now in charge of the investigation. Any witnesses to this collision who have not yet spoken to police are asked to call 905-825-4747 ext. 5065.
