A Georgetown man’s consistent desire to put service above self is being recognized.

Mike Francis has been selected to receive the Lion Fred Zorge Service Club Member of the Year award - an honour bestowed by the Georgetown Lions annually in recognition of contributions made by a member of any local service club.

The local husband and father said he was “appreciative and suprised” after learning he had been chosen for the award out of all the “good and talented people” he volunteers alongside.

Francis has been a member of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club since 2005 when he moved to Georgetown to open his insurance business. He soon found his way to the club’s board of directors and is an active past president who’s known to step up and serve on most committees, including Lobsterfest and Head for the Hills Craft Beer Festival.

The latter is a partnership of four service clubs, with Francis being a founding member of the event’s steering committee.

“Mike has been an invaluable member of  the Halton Hills Craft Beer Festival and is a pleasure to work with,” said Lion and festival chair John Fini.

Francis said he’s proud to help deliver an event that’s recognized as one of the best of its kind both locally and across the province.

He noted he would love to see more local residents get involved and volunteer at next year’s festival.

Elsewhere in town, the local man is a member of the B2C (Business to Community) networking group and played a major role in the rebranding of the organization. Each year, the members of the group raise funds for local residents in need.

“Part of being in a community is giving back,” he said. “Given my small business here in town, it’s a great opportunity to help out in the community we live and work in.”

Francis is also an active member of the Halton Hills Chamber of Commerce, supporter of  Food4Kids and Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills (CASHH).

The Lions will honour Francis on Nov. 1 with an awards dinner at Mold-Masters SportsPlex. The reception starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. The cost is $20.
