HaltonHillsToday received the following letter to the editor from reader Richard Hooper Crane in response to our story Province forges ahead with housing targets for small municipalities, including Halton Hills.

Wow - we are going to have 1.5 million homes built in Ontario in the next eight years!

In our zeal to get things done, could we please start by committing to build these homes to "climate change standards", including, at least the following installations:

  • heat pumps rather than natural gas furnaces
  • electric rather than natural gas hot water heaters
  • provision for EV battery chargers

There are lots of other ways to ensure that we are doing our best to fight climate change, including some we probably haven't thought of yet.

There is no reason why Ontario, especially Halton Hills, couldn't use this program to create model communities that help to solve both housing and climate change emergencies!
