Construction may be done as early as this fall

Residents will soon have a new spot to fuel up their bodies and their cars.

Shell Canada plans to demolish its existing gas station at the southeast corner of Trafalgar Road and Steeles Avenue and rebuild a new one, along with a drive-through fast food restaurant and a convenience store.

The restaurant, which will be a Wendy’s, will have a dual-lane drive-through that's a common sight at various fast food restaurants.

Several new parking spaces and an expanded canopy above the gas pumps are part of the plan as well.

“By expanding the canopy, but also having a quick serve and a convenience store, you just need to reposition the building,” Town Director of Planning Review Jeff Markowiak said. “New construction makes more sense.”

Town staff has completed a review of Shell’s application and requested additional details from the company. The Ministry of Transportation has already signed off the plans.

As the development is allowed under the zoning of the land, no council approval will be needed. Staff has the authority to approve a site plan, which is in essence a blueprint of how the site will be built.

The compatible zoning and relatively small size of the development means the project may be completed as early as this fall.
