Halton youth are encouraged to flex their literary or video-making muscles via an annual contest aimed at shedding a light on the region’s connection to the fight against racism.

The Halton Black History Awareness Society is now accepting submissions for its essay and video contest Local Lens: Multiculturalism: Cultural Equality.

Open to high school students at both the Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board, the contest invites participants to examine the Black experience in Halton as applied to this year’s theme – What can Canada do to improve cultural equality?: Current status and solutions.

The deadline for entry is May 31 at 5 p.m., with winners announced on June 17 and honoured at a Freedom Celebration Gala Aug. 1.

Participants must be willing to have their work republished in a ‘Local Lens’ journal.
