Earth Day is being celebrated today (April 22), but the Town of Halton Hills and Credit Valley Conservation have an entire week of events planned to mark the occasion.

Things kicked off over the weekend with a tree planting and the first round of community clean ups.

Here’s what’s planned for the rest of the week:

  • Monday, Apr. 22: Schools, business and local groups are encouraged to get outside today and make their corner of the community sparkle with a 22-Minute Makeover.
  • Wednesday, Apr. 24, 7 to 9:30 p.m.: Watch the Tribeca Film Festival-winning documentary Common Ground at the John Elliott Theatre. The movie explores regenerative agriculture and methods improving soil conditions for growing food. Tickets are $10 or $5 for students.
  • Thursday, Apr. 25, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Register for the Bird-Friendly Symposium in the Alcott Room of the Mold-Masters SportsPlex. Connect with other bird lovers and learn more about the Town’s Nature Canada certification.
  • Thursday, Apr. 25, 7 to 8 p.m.: Credit Valley Conservation will hold a free webinar discussing the best trees to grow in your yard.
  • Friday, Apr. 26: The Town is launching its second year of the tree voucher program, which supports residents planting mature trees on their property to increase the town’s tree canopy. Halton Hills residents can visit the service desks at the Mold-Masters SportsPlex, Gellert Community Centre and Acton Arena and Community Centre from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to receive a tree voucher (limit one per address). The voucher can be used for $50 off a tree $60 or more at Reds Garden Centre or Sheridan Nurseries.
  • Saturday, Apr. 27, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Annual compost and woodchip giveaway with a food bank donation at the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre, 11620 Trafalgar Rd. Bring a shovel and a container to carry your compost or woodchips.
  • Saturday, Apr. 27 starting at 8 a.m.: The Norval community is coming together for a spring clean up. Meet at McNab Park at 8 a.m. Garbage bags and gloves are being supplied by the Town of Halton Hills. Areas that will be focused on include McNab Park, Norval Park, Hwy. 7, Cemetery Hill and Adamson Street north from the dam. Coffee and drinks will be available. Rain date: Sunday, Apr. 28.
  • Saturday, Apr. 27, 10 a.m. to noon: Halton Hills’ annual bike swap at the Robert C. Austin Operations Centre. The event helps recycle bikes by getting them to people who can use them. Bikes are sold as-is. Kids bikes are $10, youth bikes $20 and adult and premium bikes are priced individually. Anyone wishing to donate a bike, tricycle or cycling equipment can drop it off at the operations centre parking lot from Apr.24 to 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. or the day of the event, Apr. 27, from 8 to 11 a.m.
  • Saturday, Apr. 27 starting at 10 a.m.: The Glen Williams Community Association is hosting a clean up in the hamlet. Meet at 10 a.m. at the Glen Park ball diamond shelter for refreshments and treats before heading out to a designated clean up area. Garbage bags and gloves will be provided. All participants will be entered into a draw to win Earth Day-themed prizes.
