St. Catherine of Alexandria Elementary school in south Georgetown was placed on hold and secure for a short time this afternoon due to a police chase in the area.

Halton Police say they called the school and advised them to implement the safety measure due to a police operation that was happening nearby. The instruction came right around when the school day was about to end.

“We had investigators in the area attempting to arrest a male,” said Halton Regional Police spokesperson Cst. Steve Elms. “He fled on foot and officers were chasing him. The male was headed in the direction of the school, so the school was placed in a hold and secure at 3:16 p.m.”

He was arrested about six minutes later without incident.

Police are not releasing any details about charges filed against the individual, what circumstances led to the pursuit or what acts the person was alleged to have committed.

The hold and secure has been lifted and the students have been dismissed.
