Georgetown’s Patrick Sipura played a key role in the Brock Badgers earning a silver medal at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) curling championships on Sunday.

Brock won all six of its matches, including a 5-3 semifinal victory over the host Guelph Gryphons, leading into the final. There, Brock met the three-time defending champion Laurier Golden Hawks.

Brock jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after stealing two in the third end, but Laurier would put up points in each of the next four ends to defend its title with a 6-3 victory.

Sipura was a consistent presence at the front end for the Brock rink, which opened the scoring in all but one of its matches. The third-year business major, who helped Brock earn an OUA bronze medal last year, was named to the OUA first all-star team at lead.

The second-place finish still earned Brock a spot in next month’s Canadian university championship in Fredericton, set for March 12 to 16.
