Kathleen Mary Gushue (Kavanagh) Ivany

July 27, 1933 – March 7, 2024

Kay passed away peacefully at Extendicare Mississauga on March 7th in her 91st year. Born and raised in her father’s childhood home on Dicks Square, St. John’s, Newfoundland, she was the seventh child in a family of thirteen and only 12 years old at the time of her mother’s death. Out of necessity, she took a prominent role in the care of her younger siblings – the youngest being only two at the time. She married in 1952 in St. John’s, and as a military spouse, lived in many places over the course of her 33-year marriage. British Columbia 1957-59, Germany 1959-62, British Columbia 1962-76, and Ontario 1976-present.

She was a kind and caring woman who absolutely adored little children and took pleasure spoiling her grandchildren. She stayed active by going to line dancing events, playing bingo, participating in outings with seniors clubs and she loved to crochet. She was assertive in teaching herself to cook and crochet. She crocheted beautiful christening gowns for her grandchildren, and they never went without handmade blankets, slippers, and mittens. Kay loved Country music, musicals, live theatre, family gatherings, and a good cup of tea.

Predeceased by her son Gary (1958, Cultus Lake, BC), granddaughter Kaitlynn Ivany (2001, Mississauga, ON), parents Hettie (Fowler), 1945 and Stan (Gushue) Kavanagh, 1979, both of St. John’s, NL; siblings, Ed 1999, NL, Mary Kavanagh 1972, NL, Stan 2000, ON, Sadie Burry 2023, NL, Angeline Ash 2017, NL, Marie 1940, NL, Annie 1935, NL, John 1936, NL, Jeannie Power 2021, ON, Bill 2022, ON, Helen Tilley 2016, ON, and Michael 1945, NL; brothers-in-law, Ed Ash 2014, NL, Mike Kavanagh 2014, NL, Albert Tilley 2020, ON, Ches Burry 2022, NL; and sister-in-law, Dot Kavanagh 2019, ON.
