September 29, 1940  -  March 26, 2024

It is with great sadness that the family of Anna Schmidt announce her passing at the age of 83. Anna was born in 1940 in Drenje, Yugoslavia and passed away at the Georgetown Hospital on March 26, 2024.

Anna was born during the war to Theresia and Martin Oswald. In the fall of 1944, the family fled their country and sought refuge in Austria. Her father reunited with them and her sister Elisabeth was born in 1946. In 1951, the family had the opportunity to emigrate to Australia, Canada or Brazil. They chose Brazil. They set sail in 1951 and lived in Sao Paulo and in the Donauschwaben settlement, Entre Rios, until 1957. Her father moved the family to Germany briefly and to their ultimate destination, Toronto, Canada in 1959. Anna met her beloved husband Josef soon after. Anna’s sister Helen was born in Toronto in 1960. Anna and Josef married in 1962.

Anna and Josef lived in the east end of Toronto where their son John was born. In 1965, they moved to Etobicoke next door to Anna’s parents and sisters. Their daughter Lisa and son Steven were born there.

Anna became a proud Canadian citizen in 1967. Anna was very adaptable and enjoyed travelling. She also enjoyed many hobbies including crochet, needlework, knitting and quilting. Most recently, crochet was her favourite activity!

Anna was a loving mother to John (Maureen), Lisa (Ralph Schuessele) and Steven (Michelle). The cherished Oma (Grandma) of Michael, Angela, Stephen, Robert, Tylor and Theresa. A treasured Great Grandma to: Caden, Chase, Olivia, Lincoln, Calvin and Colton. Anna will be fondly remembered by her sister Helen (Douglas Kells) and reunited with her late siblings Elisabeth (Gary Mohr) and Nicholas. Anna was predeceased by her husband Josef (1995), her parents Martin and Theresia Oswald and her in-laws Adam and Katharina Schmidt. Tante Anna will be missed by her nieces and late nephew Richard and their families.

Anna was a great friend to many people and was someone that people sought out for her humour and loving attitude. She was devoted to her family and they loved her deeply.

Friends will be received at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 10:00 am until 11:00 am when a funeral will be held in the chapel.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Georgetown Hospital for their wonderful care during Anna’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Georgetown Hospital Foundation or the Red Cross.
