BREAKING: Arson charges laid in fatal Georgetown house fire

A woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a fire on Victoria Street in Georgetown. Halton Police are investigating.

One person has been charged with arson in connection with a fatal house fire last week in Georgetown.

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, members of the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) and Halton Hills Fire Department responded to a fire at a residential address on Victoria Street. 

Firefighters removed one occupant from the home, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the fire destroyed two semi-detached dwellings.

According to Halton Police, officers have since arrested and charged an adult male who was the common law partner of the victim. Police say he also resided at the address.

Christopher Dayfoot, 38, of Georgetown, is charged with arson - disregard for human life.

The accused appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice on Friday and has been remanded into custody pending a future court date.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
