Halton Regional Police have made an arrest following an attempted auto theft in Milton, where police say an officer was dragged trying to apprehend a suspect in a stolen vehicle.

On Feb. 21 at approximately 3:15 a.m., police say they were dispatched to an address in the area of Woodward Avenue and Thompson Road North after thieves attempted to steal a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

"Officers quickly attended the area, at which time several suspects fled on foot," police said in a press release.

"While attempting to arrest a male in the suspect vehicle, one officer was dragged for approximately 50 metres before falling to the ground, suffering minor injuries."

Police say the driver of the suspect vehicle escaped, however after continued investigation a suspect who fled on foot was located and arrested in the backyard of a neighbouring residence.

Takiyoudine Oumerzouk, 23, of Montreal was charged with the following:

  • Theft of Motor Vehicle
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order.

At the time of his arrest, police say Oumerzouk was on a release order with conditions not to leave the province of Quebec.

Oumerzouk was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
