Superintendent Kevin Maher has been appointed to the role of deputy chief of police for the Halton Regional Police Service

The Halton Police Board has announced the appointment of Superintendent Kevin Maher to the role of deputy chief with the local police service.

The board approved the new position last month in response to the growing needs of the service and community, and solely considered internal candidates.

“I am deeply honoured to have been selected to assume the role of deputy chief," said Maher. "I look forward to working with the Police Board, Chief Tanner, Deputy Chief Wilkie, Deputy Chief Hill, and the dedicated members of the service to ensure the safety and well-being of the Region of Halton."

Maher began his policing career in 1987 as a cadet with the Toronto Police Service before joining Halton in 1990. Over the years, he has served in a number of front-line, specialized investigative unit, and senior executive leadership positions – most recently as the superintendent in charge of regional investigations. As one of the service’s six critical incident commanders, Maher is responsible for overseeing high-risk incidents in the region.

"This appointment not only strengthens our leadership team, but also positions us to tackle new challenges and seize opportunities for growth and development," said Jeff Knoll, Halton Police Board chair. "We are excited about the positive impact this will have on our community as we embark on implementing our Strategic Plan for 2024-2027."

Chief Stephen Tanner said Maher is "a strong and accomplished leader and always puts people first and foremost."

"I am very pleased that the Police Services Board recognized the tremendous talent within the HRPS and conducted their search for our third deputy from amongst internal candidates only. All who applied for the position are tremendous leaders and add so much to our senior executive team. I wish Kevin all the best for the years ahead. Deputy Chief Hill and Wilkie and I look forward to working closely with him.”
