The HRPS offers the following tips to residents in the case of a carjacking:

  • Remain cognizant of your surroundings.
  • Lock doors and close windows while in your vehicle.
  • If approached by a person with a weapon or mention of a weapon, give your vehicle up without resistance.
  • If you feel as though you are being followed, drive directly to the nearest police station.
  • Use an audible alarm that can easily be activated on your vehicle to draw attention to your location.
  • Reverse into parking spots. This allows you to drive away if you notice someone approaching your vehicle.
  • If possible, park in a well-lit area at night.

Use heightened awareness when in these vulnerable areas:

  • Gas Stations - Keep doors locked while pumping gas.
  • ATMs - Extra vigilance should be exercised at night and while using machines not enclosed in a structure.
  • Home Garages - Close your garage door at the earliest opportunity.
  • Parking Garages and Lots - Continue to be aware of surroundings and look for well-lit and populated areas to park.
  • Intersections and when stopped in traffic.
  • Parked in your vehicle - When stopped or parked in your vehicle, keep the doors locked.  Avoid distraction of mobile phone that prevents you from being aware of your surroundings.

For a parked vehicle, adhere to these safety tips:

  • As you approach your car, look around. Also, don’t use the key fob to locate your car as it may help carjackers verify their target.
  • Walk from behind your car and try to look into it.
  • Lock your door as soon as you are in your seat (this is the single-most effective countermeasure to carjackings).
  • Start your engine right away.

Original Feb. 22 information:

Halton Regional Police are looking to identify two men they say are responsible for a 'shocking and violent' carjacking in Milton, with the incident also making its way to a Halton Hills schoolyard where children were playing.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. yesterday (Feb. 21), HRPS officers say they observed a stolen white pickup truck weaving in and out of traffic in the area of Derry Road and Holly Avenue in Milton.

According to police, the truck approached the cruiser and then fled the area at a high rate of speed. Police were not able to stop the vehicle as it sped away.

Police say the same truck was seen on several occasions driving erratically throughout Milton and was involved in two hit-and-run collisions, as well as a gas drive-off at a Petro Canada station.

The truck was also witnessed driving through a fence at Pineview Public School in Halton Hills, and into a playground where children were playing.

"A supervised class of Kindergarten students were outside at the time of the incident, but were not injured and were immediately brought inside the school," says a statement from the Halton District School Board. "The kindergarten class was in its regularly fenced-in area at the time when outside, however this fence was not breached by the vehicle."

No physical injuries were reported during these incidents, police say.

Around 9:40 a.m., police received a report of a carjacking at the Metro parking lot located at 1050 Kennedy Circle in Milton. Police say the same white pickup truck struck a Honda CRV that was parked in the lot.

"Two male suspects exited the truck and smashed the driver's side window of the CRV," police said in a press release. "The suspects opened the door and forcefully removed a female who was seated in the driver’s seat.  The female was thrown to the ground by the suspects."

The victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This is a shocking and violent crime that put the lives of many Milton residents at risk. We are dedicating all available resources and will relentlessly pursue those responsible and hold them accountable,” said 1 District Superintendent Dave Stewart.

Police are also aware that a video that was taken of the incident and has been shared online.

The white pickup truck (2014 Ford F250) had been reported stolen from Peel Region on Jan. 7.

The stolen Honda CRV was later recovered by police in the area of Kennedy Road South in Brampton. The vehicle was not occupied at the time.

  • Suspect 1: male, white, approximately 6-foot-2, thin build, wearing a grey sweater
  • Suspect 2: male, white, dark hair, in his late 20s, clean shaven, wearing a dark coloured hooded sweater.
