ype 1 diabetes introduces children, youth, and families to a new reality, one that can make some kids feel different from their friends.

Diabetes Canada and the Georgetown community have come together for the first All in to End Diabetes: Casino Night.

This inaugural event raised $78,000, which supported local children living with type 1 diabetes attending D-Camps, a medically supervised summer camp on the shores of Lake Waseosa in Muskoka.

“We are so grateful for all our wonderful sponsors!” says Olivia Grossi, Community Engagement Coordinator at Diabetes Canada..

“This event would not have been successful without the amazing help from Georgetown Toyota and surrounding communities. We want to thank Georgetown Toyota for letting us use their space and help make this event come to life.”

Founded in 1964, Camp Huronda has become an integral part of the lives of children and families affected by type 1 diabetes —a condition that introduces kids and their families to a new reality that requires the skills of blood glucose testing, priming needles for injections and counting the daily intake of carbohydrates.

For many children and youth, there is no one else in their school or community who has type 1 diabetes, and it can be challenging to accept a diagnosis.  At Camp Huronda, every camper has type 1 diabetes, allowing them to experience an atmosphere of inclusivity, gain independence, and connect with other kids who understand them.

“Our vision is a world free of the effects of diabetes. That’s why we’re working together to improve the quality of life of people living with diabetes,” Grossi said.
