Conversation, co-working and coffee abound at Roxy Centre

The community centre in downtown Acton is offering space for residents to connect for work or leisure

The Roxy Centre director Payge Lucas is striving to connect the community through a variety of activities, such as a free Coffee Hour.

There’s a spot in downtown Acton that’s now providing space for residents to connect for work or leisure.

The Roxy Centre - a ministry of New Ventures Canada - recently opened its doors on Mill Street with a goal to “love the community of Acton by providing value and connection,” said director Payge Lucas.

“We’re doing things a little differently than we have in the past. We’re not a coffee shop anymore - we are a community centre,” she explained.

But as with all good things, java is certainly still part of the activities taking place at the new Roxy Centre.

The Coffee Hour runs on Monday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon, with free Black Creek Coffee being offered while those who attend socialize.

The centre then serves as a co-working space on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coffee and tea is provided for those who reserve a spot for $25, and Lucas said she’s looking to partner with downtown restaurants to offer lunch discounts for the co-workers.

A menu will also be available for Spoon In, a smoothie bowl business that operates through the Roxy kitchen.

Space in the centre can be used for facility rentals from Monday to Saturday, with Crossings Community Church continuing to use the building on Sundays.

Going forward, Lucas said she’d like to see the centre offer free workshops on topics such as financial planning, marriage/relationships, cooking and more.

“We want to elevate us all as a community, and work together for the needs of the community,” she said.

The Roxy Centre is a pick up location for No One Goes Hungry, an initiative that provides free individual frozen meals.

Volunteer opportunities are also available at the centre.
