Couples will soon have one more option for wedding venues in Halton Hills.

Council said yes to Town staff performing civil wedding ceremonies at Town Hall during Monday's (July 10) meeting.

Staff hopes to begin offering the service as early as Sept. 1, following council's adoption of the necessary bylaw next month.

The Town currently issues marriage licenses, but Service Halton Hills doesn't offer to solemnize weddings at the moment.

"We were actually planning on doing it (the ceremonies) in council chambers. That was our first initial thought," Deputy Clerk Renée Brown told council. The project is still in its infancy, so details are not finalized.

Some aspects are known though. Once implemented, the clerk's office will be performing the ceremonies.

A fee of $385 will be charged for couples looking to tie the knot. A package price of $500 will also be offered for a ceremony and marriage licence combined.

"I think it's great," said Councillor Mike Albano in praising the decision, with Councillor Alex Hilson sharing similar sentiments.

Town Hall issues an average of 150 licences per year. A report to council on the matter states that "there has been a marked increase in applicants interested in a small private civil ceremony at Town Hall."
