NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF HALTON HILLS

This year’s theme for the annual emergency preparedness campaign is 'Plan for Every Season'. From May 5-11, all levels of government, and various organizations and businesses, will work to share the common message of recognizing potential risks and preparing for the unexpected.

The Province of Ontario will be conducting an alert ready test on May 8 at 12:55 p.m. This national service delivers critical information to Canadians via radio, television and compatible devices. Residents can stay also updated by following @OntarioWarnings.

“Every season brings its own unique circumstances where an emergency can occur,” said Bruce Morrison, deputy chief with the Halton Hills Fire Department. “In the spring low-lying households may be prone to flooding in times of excessive rainfall, roads may be slippery and high winds could cause fallen tree branches and downed hydro lines. We live in an area where weather-related events offer a high probability for hazards – whether it’s keeping cool or managing the impacts of ice storms. The key is to plan and have discussions with all family members so everyone knows what to do in any situation.”

Residents are encouraged to create their safety plans now in advance of an emergency. Information is available for download from the Town’s website or copies can be picked up at municipal arenas and the Gellert Community Centre from May 5-11.

An emergency plan should include the following:

  • Communications with family members
  • Evacuation procedures and safe meeting places
  • Pet care
  • Fire prevention and safety procedures
  • Utility shutoffs
  • Copies and safe storage of important documents.

“Safeguard your family, your employees, colleagues and yourself by having conversations and making plans,” said Mayor Ann Lawlor. “The Town has lots of resources to support people in creating their own emergency preparedness plans.”

Residents are encouraged to expand their emergency preparedness efforts and reach out to neighbours and friends who are vulnerable or need assistance such as seniors, pet owners, and people with disabilities and special needs.
