Camp Hoo-Ha Halton chapter director Erin Burger is thrilled with the local response to the camp's events so far.

There’s a movement gaining momentum in Halton Hills that aims to bring women together for some good, old-fashioned fun and skill building.

Camp Hoo-Ha’s Halton chapter is one of the latest to launch in Canada - an initiative that offers a monthly evening out for local women based on the nostalgia and shenanigans of childhood camp days, badges and all.

“Basically it’s about learning life skills and connecting with like-minded women,” said Erin Burger, Halton chapter director.

A typical Camp Hoo-Ha event includes dinner, drinks, a simple craft and guest speaker, with all participants going home with a badge.

Topics that have been covered so far in the evenings hosted at Acton Town Hall include self defence, home organization and proper bra fitting.

With her background in recreation and events, and childhood experiences at camp and Girl Guides, Burger said the Camp Hoo-Ha concept - which started in western Canada - really resonated with her. After learning more about it, she was quick to become involved and launched the local chapter in March.

"Coming out of the pandemic, people are looking to connect, so I think the timing of it all and how it came together is very beautiful,” said Burger.

With a following of over 1,000 local women and counting on Facebook, Halton’s Camp Hoo-Ha is certainly garnering interest in the community.

“I was super excited to go to one of the events,” said Acton’s Melanie Fox. “The food was great and the women are so empowering. The coolest thing about this camp is that you learn new tips and tricks.”

For those who are attending one of the events on their own, there’s a ‘single and ready to mingle’ table to help break the ice and make everyone feel welcome.

Burger said she’s been very mindful about keeping all aspects of the camp local, including the guest speakers and dinner, which is catered by Kit’s Little Kitchen in Glen Williams.

She noted that she hopes to plan an overnight Camp Hoo-Ha outing next spring.
