Halton Hills is celebrating its first inhabitants with Indigenous History Month this June. As part of the festivities, the John Elliott Theatre will be screening three Indigenous themed films.

Patrons are invited to come before the screenings to enjoy activities, table displays and refreshments. Along with a free ticket, they can get a $10 DIY embroidery and beading kit from the box office.

Here is what's in store for those who are interested:

Run Woman Run, June 23 at 7 p.m.- Beck, a resident of Six Nations, is down on her luck. Her mother recently passed away, leading her down an unhealthy road and causing her to contract type 2 diabetes. She is visited by the ghost of Tom Longboat, an Onondaga long distance runner and hero in the First World War. He teaches her to become an honour runner. Beck slowly turns her life around.

From Wisconsin with Love, June 30 at 7 p.m.- The story is about a four-year protest against a proposed taconite mine in Penokee Hills, Wisconsin. They formed what was called the Harvest Education Learning Project, a five-acre envisioning and protest camp led by the Anishnaabe.

Stories from Land Back Camp- Directly after From Wisconsin with Love on June 30, Stories from Land Back Camp will be played. It tells the story of a teepee that was erected in an urban park on the Grand River (O:seKenhionhata:tie is its Indigenous name). It quickly became a space for queer, trans, two-spirit and non-binary people.
