A silly fundraiser has helped out a very serious cause.

The second Red Nose Day since the initiative was relaunched in 2023 raised $788, with the proceeds being turned over to the Townsend Smith Foundation today (March 7).

The money was raised by having local businesses and residents purchase red noses to wear and brighten the day of others.

It's a revival of 'Lighten Up, Canada' Day, which was started by former Acton Citizen of the Year Jack Carpenter many years ago and spread across the country.

The money will go toward helping build a hospice at the corner of Trafalgar Road and 5 Sideroad. It will serve the residents of Milton and Halton Hills.

Marg Saliba of the Townsend Smith Foundation said every dollar helps, but noted every fundraiser also assists in another way.

“It spreads awareness, which is what we need,” she said. “All three communities have really come on board and that’s great to see.”

Red Nose Day organizer Nancy Wilkes said plans are underway for next year to continue to grow the initiative.

“It’s only going to get bigger and better,” she said.
