Acton runner nominated for NCAA woman of year award

The local distance runner won two conference championships for the University of New Mexico Lobos during her senior season

Stephanie Parsons has been selected as one of the Mountain West Conference’s two nominees for NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The Acton distance runner won two conference championships for the University of New Mexico Lobos during her senior season. She won the Mountain West title in the mile at the conference indoor championships and then took first place in the 1,500-metre during the outdoor season, setting a conference record of 4:17.17 in the process. She also finished second in the 1,500m and fourth in the 800m.

In 2021, Parsons helped New Mexico win the conference cross-country title and finish third at the national championships, where she finished 36th as an individual.

The Christ the King Catholic Secondary School graduate began her college career at Edinboro University, where she was twice named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference’s women’s track and field athlete of the year.

Parsons graduated from Edinboro in exercise science with a 3.94 grade-point average before completing her master’s degree at New Mexico.

Parsons worked at several Edinboro cross-country summer camps and was involved in several team community service projects. At New Mexico she was a graduate assistant in the school’s physiology lab.
