A project that will bring a dozen affordable units for individuals with special needs to Acton has been given the go-ahead by Halton Hills Council.

The two-storey community housing building that Support House plans to build at 47 Maria St. was approved during the July 4 council meeting.

The building will contain 12 one-bedroom living areas for those with mental health and addictions issues, a common room, multipurpose room and an outdoor amenity area. Behind the property is York House, a heritage building with another assisted living-style home.

The site is currently occupied by a single family home, which Support House uses as a five-bed supportive living setting for youth called Life House.

That structure, as well as an accompanying garden shed, will be demolished to make way for the new building. Support House will find temporary housing for the residents during the construction phase.

“Support House has been operating on the site since 2009,” Nancy Frieday, senior planner for planning consultants GSP Group, told council. “This redevelopment would provide for an expansion for much-needed affordable and supportive housing in Acton and Halton overall.”

She added: “It’s a good location, close to the Acton downtown where there are services for the residents and also the GO station for regional transportation.”

She emphasized that each of the rooms are self-contained to provide the tenants with independent living.

Councillor Mike Albano asked if there would be a staff member living on site. Frieday said no, but one of the residents would be deemed a "key tenant" who will have a supervisory role to play, particularly when support staff isn't on site.
