A much-beloved hangout in Georgetown South that's been perking up locals for almost a decade will soon close its doors for good.

Southpaw Coffee Bar and Cafe has announced that its last day serving customers will be May 3 as the landlord hasn't renewed its lease in the plaza at the corner of Miller Drive and Eighth Line.

The Georgetown community was stunned to learn of the closing once the news made the rounds on social media, garnering over 100 messages of sympathy and support.

In announcing the "very sad and unexpected" news, founder and owner Mike Murphy thanked Southpaw's patrons in a framed message on the cafe's counter.

"It is you who make Southpaw what it is, bringing warmth, energy and laughter," his heartfelt statement read.

Murphy's left-handedness and Southpaw's location in Georgetown South are the reasons behind the cafe's name.

The local bean brewery has been in business for seven years. In that time, Murphy took part in the community, at one point dying his hair to support the charity Cancer Assistance Halton Hills.

Growing up, Murphy said he had to compete with his large seven-member family for dessert, motivating him to take up baking. Living abroad in six countries diversified his palate. With his skills in tow, Murphy opened Southpaw. The rest is history.

The owner says that the coming weeks will be focused on managing inventory.

"As a result, we may run out of items as we get closer to the closing date," Murphy's message said.
