More Community Safety Zones are coming to Halton Hills.

The Town of Halton Hills is implementing several new Community Safety Zones (CSZ), which it intends to patrol by a mobile speed enforcement camera starting next year.

During its July 4 meeting, town council approved eight more CSZs, which will be added to the four the municipality already has in place.

A CSZ is a stretch of road where safety is of particular concern. These are areas like roads near schools, parks and seniors centres - any place where there are vulnerable road users. Fines for speeding are doubled in those areas.

Staff intends to have the eight new safety zones in place by the end of 2022, with over a dozen more to come. Pending 2023 budget approval, the Town plans to introduce an automated speed enforcement program next year via a mobile speed camera that will be rotated around to the various CSZs.

Fines would be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle and do not include demerit points to impact driving records, similar to tickets processed through the red light camera program.

The fine amount varies by how many kilometres over the speed limit the vehicle was travelling.

The new CSZs will be on:

  • Churchill Road North between Tanners Drive and Peel Street (McKenzie-Smith Bennett Public School)
  • Maple Avenue between Mountainview Road North and Guelph Street, (Dominion Gardens Park)
  • Miller Drive between Eighth Line and Argyll Road (St. Brigid Catholic Elementary and School and Sacre-Coeur Catholic Elementary School)
  • Barber Drive between Argyll Road and Niagara Trail (St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Elementary School)
  • Danby Road between Barber Drive and Silver Pond Drive (Ethel Gardiner Public School)
  • Eaton Street between Forsyth Crescent and Chaplin Crescent (Silver Creek Public School)
  • 15 Side Road between Trafalgar Road and Belmont Boulevard (Stewarttown Middle School)
  • 22 Side Road between Fifth Line and Elizabeth Street (Limehouse Public School).
